Past Community Projects

The Four Canoes Project

A Reconciliation Project with Youth from Regent Park

In partnership with Indigenous Knowledge Carrier, and Master Canoe Builder Josy Thomas, we were very pleased to host the creation of a traditional birch bark canoe. This project, funded by Canadian Heritage, saw participants from Regent Park and beyond working collaboratively with him. Participants learned about traditional teachings, shared how their own cultures intersect, and participated in the hands-on creation of a canoe, drums, and a community mural while learning about art, design, and culture. The project culminated in a sharing in the community. Over 40 people, 6 months-96 years old participated.

The Spectrum Collective

Kick Start Arts is pleased to have collaborated with the tenants of the Daniels Spectrum Building (An arts and cultural hub in Regent Park). For three summers, we acted as Artistic Directors/Producers for their collaborative multi-disciplinary ‘Summer Arts Lab’ for youth ages 11-18. The Collective includes: ArtHeart, COBA Dance, Native Earth, Regent Park Film Festival, and the Regent Park School of Music. Artscape, The Centre for Social Innovation, and Pathways to Education were all supporting partners in this project. Participants explored a common social justice theme through drama, dance, visual art, music, media and writing – the week-long exploration culminated in a performance, and community pot luck.

We are looking for funding to continue this in future years.

Regent Park Dance!

Regent Park Dance offered youth, ages 10-15, from Regent Park and beyond, free training in dance and choreography.

Students explored various dance styles and learned to create their own choreography! Fun! Connection! DANCE!

“If you’re thinking about joining I recommend it – it’s a very positive space. I was honestly overwhelmed at first, but in the end it was very enjoyable! You should join.”
– Praveena
“My favourite thing about the program is you get to make your own choreography, and you get to explore different dance styles. If you’re thinking about joining the program – go for it! It will be fun.”
– Joelle
“My favourite part of this class was working on the choreography, especially the hip hop. It was really fun!”
– Kashyap
