the lost spells
the lost spells was created in response to the removal of words pertaining to the natural world from the Oxford Junior Dictionary. They were replaced by words about technology and the virtual world, highlighting the powerful sign of the growing divide between childhood and nature. Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris set out to create a “spell book” that would recapture the imagination through word and paint, reigniting a childhood fascination with the world around us.
Using visual arts, creative writing, drama, dance, and music we’ve created a beautiful, lyrically poetic unit appropriate for Junior/Intermediate/Senior students, exploring the following Big Ideas:
- The natural world
- Words and their meaning
- Environmentalism
- Magic, Incantations, Protection Spells, Lullabies, Blessings
- Power of the Arts
